The pub opened in Ellet at the end of 2014 and quickly gained a reputation for its artisanal pizza. A few months after its opening, Brickoven presented its first beers, a cream ale and an India pale ale.

He participated in the annual Summit Brew Path, which was canceled in 2020 due to coronavirus concerns.

The facility was designed by Joshua and Nicole Bringman, who brought a passion for craft beer and pizza to the business. Joshua Bringman had experience as a restaurant manager and Nicole Bringman used her construction experience to build the pub’s brick oven.

The couple used a Kickstarter campaign to support the launch, although they said at the time that they were ready to move forward regardless of the outcome of the campaign.

“We’ve been talking about it for years and years and we finally decided that we were going to put our money where our mouth is,” Joshua Bringman said in an interview with the Beacon Journal in July 2013.

Brickoven opened at the start of a rapid expansion of the Akron region’s microbrewery industry, which brought several establishments to the region.

The post announcing the closure of Brickoven had been preceded by a post two days earlier on an equipment malfunction; the establishment closed early that evening. No details of the malfunction have been released.

Brickoven has adjusted its opening hours as the COVID-19 pandemic progressed and limited its opening days in early March to Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

The closing announcement drew more than 200 comments from fans of the facility. Many lament the loss of a favorite pizza; others discuss Brickoven beer options.

The owners did not immediately return a phone and text for comment.
