Burg Blog: Everyone loses – TheBurg

In the business world, there is an old cliché called the “win-win”.

A win-win means that an agreement or transaction is so good that everyone wins – all parties walk away happy.

In Harrisburg this week, we had the exact opposite of win-win: lose-lose.

On Tuesday, Knead Pizza abruptly closed its doors. The shutdown came just days after some of their dozens of workers announced they had applied to join a union.

Personally, I don’t know the full story behind the employees’ decision to unionize or the owners’ decision to close, so I can’t add anything significant, let alone factual, to the ensuing online brawl. If guesswork is what you want, you can visit any number of Facebook pages (including ours) to feast on speculation and dispute.

However, I know that everyone lost.

The owners lost their business. Employees lost their jobs. Customers lost their excellent food and beer. The community has lost its local pizzeria. The town lost another small business.

Again, I can’t speak to issues like the viability of the business or the needs of the workers or the intentions of the Philadelphia-based union. I guess if all parties could have foreseen what would happen, the outcome would have been very different.

But it went down as it went down.

Kneading is no more. Everyone lost.
