Last name: Matthew Walls

New title: Franchise Manager, Caribou Coffee

Previous title: Director of Global Development, CKE Restaurants

As Caribou’s first franchise manager, Walls will lead Caribou’s domestic and international franchise efforts, according to a statement emailed to Restaurant Dive. Caribou, which has 732 units, has 273 franchised establishments in nine countries. The company added the franchise to its US system last fall, after Caribou and Einstein Bagels were combined with Panera Bread to form Panera Brands. The brands were united under a single entity before Panera’s supposed return to public markets.

Walls worked as Director of Global Development at CKE Restaurants from June 2021 to June 2022, according to LinkedIn. During this time, according to the release, Walls helped transform the CKE brand with a “program focused on store renovations, integrating new technologies and improving operations.” He has also held various positions in operations, e-commerce and logistics at Domino’s Pizza and Yum Brands.

Caribou CEO John Butcher said Walls’ strong franchising and development background made him a good fit for the new C-suite role.

“His proven experience in franchising and growing efforts while working with domestic and international partners makes him uniquely qualified to lead Caribou’s franchise business,” Butcher said in the statement.

Caribou has expanded in the United States through a combination of company-owned and non-traditional stores, the latter totaling 137 locations, according to the release. Since adding the optional franchise last year, the company has added franchisees in Ohio and Florida, for a total of approximately 12 franchised units in the United States.
