KEWEENAW BAY, Mich. (WLUC) — More than a month has passed since a fire completely burned through the dining room and kitchen at Carla’s Lakeshore Restaurant and Motel.

We are just north of Baraga off US-41.

The owners’ grandson, Carla and Doug Engle, lives in the building next door.

The night of the fire, he was having a drink inside the restaurant when he saw smoke and called Doug.

“I got here in less than five minutes; I live just down the street,” Engle said. “I couldn’t see a lot of smoke, but there was some smoke. I put my hands on the door to get in, it was a metal door, and the handle was very hot. So, I opened the door just a bit, and the air inside was really hot, I couldn’t see any flames or anything, and it was really smoky. And I said, ‘I’m getting out of here, that’s not the right thing to do.’ “.

Last week, the Michigan State Police (MSP) concluded their investigation into the fire.

No cause was determined, and nothing criminal was suspected.

The Engles now plan to operate the motel for the summer.

“We were shooting for the 4th of July, that’s when the busy season starts,” Engle continued. “And hopefully maybe before that, but we have a lot of cleaning to do first. We’re just battening down the hatches until winter is over, and then we’ll see things through in the spring.

The Engles are waiting for news from their insurance company before undertaking any reconstruction of the restaurant.

However, they are already planning.

“I already have plans in mind to make this a bit smaller operation,” Engle added. “And yet we still serve our lake whitefish and lake trout and Carla’s great hospitality is what drives the business.”
