Gyros like these are on the menu at the brand new Nick the Greek on North Blackstone Avenue in Fresno.

Nick the Greek

Nick the Greek opened its first Fresno restaurant this week.

It is a franchised chain of quick-service restaurants specializing in Greek cuisine. The Fresno location is on North Blackstone Avenue near Red Robin in the Universal Park mall.

It’s in the space formerly occupied by Doy Grill.

And another Nick, the Greek site, goes to Clovis.

The search for an exact location has yet to begin there, said owner/franchisee Paul Singh.

The parent company is in the midst of a big expansion, with about two dozen new restaurants slated to open in Northern California. It also has locations in Texas, Kansas, and Nevada.

The menu

The gyroscope (pronounced “yeer-oh”) is the most popular seller. Specifically, the gyro made with a mixture of beef and lamb is a best seller, as well as the chicken gyro.

The meat is wrapped in pita bread with tomatoes, onions and various sauces. Most of Nick the Greek’s gyros also contain fries.

Pork, vegetables and falafel are also available in gyros.

You can also get gyro bowls (minus the bread), salads, and sides like hummus. Fries are also on the menu, including regular or Nick’s fries topped with feta, garlic, spiced yogurt, a choice of protein and green onions.

Most entries range from $10 to $15.

The restaurant is also taking orders through its website and through delivery apps including DoorDash, Grubhub and Uber Eats.

Greek restaurants in Fresno?

Owner Singh has spent 32 years in the restaurant industry, including as owner wing stop locations in Sacramento.

Nick, the Greek franchises were quickly bought up, he said.

“I did my research and there weren’t a lot of (Greek) options in Fresno, and then this chain was booming and had great reviews,” he said. “If I didn’t jump on it when I was doing it, it was going to go away.”

Fresno has few restaurants that market themselves solely as Greek, although there are plenty of Mediterranean and Middle Eastern restaurants. The regions share many of the same flavors and ingredients, although there are nuances depending on the country.

Who is Nick anyway?

There are actually three men named Nick who inspired the name of the restaurant. The three cousins - who go by the names Baby Nick, Big Nick and Little Nick – founded the company.

Details: Nick the Greek is at 7675 N. Blackstone Ave., Suite 115. Hours: 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.
