Volunteers and logistical support are needed for a large trash cleanup effort on July 9, 2022. The site is located in Seattle’s largest contiguous forest, the West Duwamish Greenbelt. An estimated 50,000 pounds of trash is marked for removal from an encampment near the South Seattle College Arboretum in West Seattle.

We Heart Seattle volunteers have reached out to current residents of the site and are offering assistance with housing, medical care, food and other available services. Site coordinators work with the college, as well as nearby nonprofits, schools, and businesses regarding cleanup.

Due to the slope (+40%) and the ecologically sensitive area, vehicles will not be able to access the site and waste will have to be evacuated by hand. We Heart Seattle wants coordinated efforts to ensure the safety of volunteers while they work, as well as the health of the habitat. Experienced ecological catering professionals and enthusiasts are encouraged to help with the logistics, preparation and execution of the event.

We Heart Seattle is committed to providing support services to those in need while restoring urban parks and forests. To date, 576,800 pounds of litter has been removed from green spaces and 112 people have been helped off the streets. Previous outreach sites include Kinnear Park, Hooverville, Woodland Park, Green Lake, MacLean Park, Georgetown, Ballard, Discovery Park, Lake City Way, Little Saigon, Queen Anne, Belltown and other areas of greater Seattle.

Removal efforts will begin July 9 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with site preparation throughout June.
